Frequently asked questions

When is a Canadian corporate tax return due?

A T2 corporate income tax return is due six months after your corporation’s fiscal year end. Any balance owing is due earlier than the return itself — generally two or three months after year end depending on the corporation — so the filing deadline and the payment deadline are not the same date. We track both for the corporations we work with.

Does my corporation have to file a T2 even with no income?

Yes. A resident corporation must file a T2 return every tax year even if it was inactive or had no tax payable. Skipping a nil return is a common and avoidable source of penalties, and it can complicate later filings.

What do you need from me to prepare a corporate return?

Typically your bookkeeping records or accounting file for the year, bank and credit card statements, prior year returns and notices of assessment, payroll and GST/HST filings, and details of any asset purchases or dispositions. If your bookkeeping is not current we can bring it up to date first — it is one of the services we offer.

Can you take over from another accountant partway through?

Yes. We regularly pick up corporations from a previous accountant, including files with unfiled prior years. We start by reviewing what has already been filed so nothing is duplicated or missed.
